Jordan, Please stop making excuses for why you stopped being a vegan.
Vegans move to eliminating animal products from our diets because we believe we should not harm non-humans in any way. Veganism is NOT a lifestyle, but an ethical commitment to eliminating non-human suffering in any way we can.
Yes of course, we need to keep our bodies in good order, but be honest here: the reason you are giving up a vegan diet is because you believe (subconsciously maybe) your desire for the taste of 'meat' or fish or other non-human animal product outweighs the suffering of another living being. No one HAS to eat 'animal' products in order to stay healthy. Please stop kidding yourself.
A further thought is the environmental damage being done by human obsession with non-human animal products. If we don't curtail our appetites for these, and develop some respect for other life forms we will not have a habitable planet on which to live at all.
And for goodness' sake, stop listening to all these old wives' tales about 'paleo' and other silly food fads which are all designed to make money and nothing else.
Please sit down and honestly examine your thinking about all this, and stop looking for guidance from all these psuedo-scientists and nutrionists!

Best wishes,

Good morning Jordan,

So happy to have stumbled upon your post. I have chronic Lymes disease and recently, (3 months ago), started eating vegan. My joints stopped throbbing overnight. I felt lighter and had much improved digestion. I couldn’t stop blathering to everyone about the benefits of “clean” eating. I started to notice that the neuropathy in my feet was increasing dramatically, my vision was worsening as well. I was sleeping more, and my cognition, (already compromised by Lymes and a sub arachnoid aneurysm), was tanking. I broke 3 bones in my foot on three separate occasions and the blood vessels in my eyes and extremities constantly burst. Like you, I was trying to ignore my symptoms, especially since I had been tooting the horn about Veganism. I finally decided to reintroduce animal protein back into my diet. I haven’t been back on the animal protein long enough to say definitively that all those issues were related to Veganism however, some symptoms have improved. My joint pain is back too. (Gout due to the purines?)

All these distractions aside, I wanted to thank you for your bravery, and to point to the greater issue,- Self-Love. No one can take care of us like we can. We must be able to turn off the inner critic which has been nourished on the Fatty Acids of Public Opinion, the Salt of Social Media & a dash of Pseudo Science selling the latest trends of Snake oils. We are all so different but for this; Self-Love & Self- acceptance, this will heal us, one and all.

Thank you for the reminder-

Love,
Bettie

It sounds like your problem isn't with veganism but with a HIGHLY restricted disordered diet. What you describe reads like an eating disorder, full stop. Every time I see one of these stories, the one thing they have in common is that the person has serious issues with food and have a highly restricted diet because of it, but when they come out with their story, it's always, 'I'm leaving veganism' as if veganism = a highly restricted diet and or an eating disorder. Anyone who is trying to live on an obssessively restricted diet of any kind is going to have health problems. What you presented was an all or nothing, black and white false dichotomy: what you've labeled as veganism which goes way, way beyond it, or being not vegan, and that's just not intellectually honest. It does everyone a disservice to paint this as veganism was bad for me, I'm listening to my body, I can't be vegan when in fact you were hurting your body with a highly restrictive diet. It's just like Jaden Smith and a bunch of other celebrities, bloggers, vloggers and social media influencers with the exact same narrative. It's really not fair to mask a highly restrictive diet behind "veganism". Your issue is with your mindset around food, not the food itself. Oh, and a book tops it all. Come now. Be honest with yourself and the public. This was never about veganism, which by the way isn't a health trend, but an ethical lifestyle.

If a vegan diet "can absolutely work" or whatever you said, why haven't you made it work then? From what you wrote in your post, you were not eating enough on your "vegan" diet. Green juice for breakfast and quinoa and roasted vegetables for dinner? Of course it wasn't satisfying.

Please, don't butcher Nietzsche when you can't even spell his name.

My thoughts are you are unbelievably selfish and narcissistic. Your eating disorder is not an excuse to start abusing animals again.

If you feel like you are lacking anything being vegan, you arent doing it right and you dont eat enough or the right things. Putting your comfort ahead of others lives is wrong. Simply educate yourself on what does your body need and find the food that does not cause other's death and suffering (animals and humans) and our planet to be destroyed. Please stop saying these things because you werent able to do it the right way, we are trying to make a positive change here.
