I ran the Chicago last year and was dealing with a lot of injury throughout training. I was doing the nike schedule (whichis a lot of running back-to-back without much rest), and I ended up getting runner's knee in both legs, a strain in the muscles in my rib, the whole bit. I switched to Hal Higdon's training program, and it worked SO much better for me. Don't be afraid to experiment, and change your schedule if it isn't working. I have such a disciplined personality that changing programs made me uncomfortable, but it was the right call.

I am about to run the Naperville marathon in November, so I'm hoping that will go well. Volunteering at the ChiMarathon today got me really pumped but nervous.

My advice:
-take the nutrition really seriously, especially with the tummy issues you have. Running long distance screwed up my digestive system (in a good way, I suppose) So be careful with what you eat/the timing of certain foods. Prepare your hunger level to get a bit ridiculous (I'm talking stashing nutrition bars in your purse when you go to the bar). make sure you eat wholesome carbs, protein, and foods with antioxidants/omega-3
-Also, I suggest trying during race nutrition now to get used to it once your doing long runs (which you're prob familiar with since you've done halves). Goos, chews, sport beans, or dates (for the natural route) work. I prefer the goos (bleh), beans, and dates.
-don't get discouraged by weight gain. your body is adapting to carb storage, water retention, muslce and a teensy bit of fat realistically
-weight train so you can use your upper body to aide the lower. lower back and abs get neglected a lot, so definitely focus on those as well as overall body workouts
-go easy on yourself. its a difficult feat but once you hit that 20 miler long run, you're golden. if something doesn't feel right, STOP and sub with cross train until you feel better. ice, rest, heating pads, ibuprofen are your new friends now (since this truly will consume your social life)

congrats on the new venture! the training process is grueling but it mentally prepares you for the race, so enjoy it as much as you can! it can be such a gratifying experience, and bragging rights that day are always nice.

Hi Jordan! I started training for my first marathon last August (2014) and since then have ran the New York Marathon and the London marathon. Both were amazing, and you will truly get no better feeling after completing one. I have a lot of tips and tricks that I used to run my first one,,and then a second! Let me know if I can help :)

Good luck! If you've run a couple of half marathons, you can definitely do it - speaking as someone who ran two halfs (not really training well for the second...) and then decided I wanted to try a full! My first full is next weekend, and I took about 4 1/2 months to train. You're capable of way more than you think, even in the moments where it doesn't seem like 26.2 is possible. Trust me, it will be! Also, flip belts rock. :)

Love it!

"WELL let me tell you. I truly believe that when you surround yourself with likeminded people who inspire you, you’re much more likely to get motivated to try new things and take on new goals, no matter how big they are."

Congrats on committing to training- that's almost a marathon in itself!
I am running Chicago marathon this weekend and love to use an app called Strava. You can map out your courses ahead of time, find routes and connect with other runners and cheer each other on. Another helpful tool would be a Garmin pacing watch, so you can train to run consistent paces and track your heart rate/effort on runs.

Good luck! See you on the streets of Brentwood :)

Ji Jordan. I recently stumbled onto your blog and am SO happy I did. I find myself coming back all the time to read a new post. You are truly a breathe of fresh air. Anyways, I completed my first full marathon in May and it changed my life! Being able to push your body to the point of exhaustion is weirdly therapeutic. I am so excited to follow along on your journey. You can do it! Also, I think this may be the inspiration I needed to sign up for my next one. Maybe I'll see you out there come Valentines day 2016 :)

I use Map my run but this app seems a bit more easy to use! I live close by in Venice, CA and would love to hear where you run for your runs? I know the beach is good, but sometime's you want to go where no one is around haha.

Also such props for this. It's amazing! I need to run a marathon sometime, now I'm thinking about it! LOL.

Yes, check it out!!! A marathon is an extreme endeavor but it is a totally useful app for normal workouts and shorter runs as well, and even walks!! Let me know your thoughts if you try it! XO
