I respect everything you've said about your need to return to a balanced life (definitely). What's missing from this post for me is - what about the animals? Yes I said it. You may not want to label yourself vegan and that's totally fine, but don't put a bad name to veganism or make it sound like a restricting diet because it is NOT for so many people - in fact, it's healed many people of their eating disorders. Your view on veganism is a bit self centered and you're forgetting that vegans aren't just worried about what they eat but are in fact passionate about changing the world for the better. If you haven't read it, check out "The World Peace Diet". Again, I'm not telling you to be vegan or that you can't change your mind, I'm just suggesting that you don't label it as bad or restrictive just because it didn't work for you. Being vegan is MORE than a diet and if you don't want to be part of that - fine!

Hi
I first became vegan for health reasons, although nowdays I'm vegan more because of ethical reasons. (before that I was ovo-vegetarian for 2 years)
At first when I became vegan, I felt great. But now, 2 years later. I feel miserable. My blood tests came out fine. No deficiencies. What suprised me was that my cholesterol is still as high as before going vegan. And I don't eat any animal products. (Maybe because of coconut fats?)
I feel very depressed and have zero motivation to study, no energy to work out and no libido at all (I'm 25). I eat a very healthy and balanced vegan diet. I am very well educated about nutrition so I think I know what to eat in order to be heathy .That's why I don't undertstand why it's not working at all. My boyfriend is not vegan and he has tons of energy, no defeciencies at all and unlike me he has low cholesterol. This is so unfair!
What can I do in order to be healthy? I tried tons of supplements but with the exeption of zinc, none of them seem to work.

Hi Mary! I COMPLETELY understand and was exactly in your shoes a year and a half ago. Good for you for listening to your body and reincorporating more foods back into your diet! Those hunger pangs and uncontrollable ravenous cravings at the end of my vegan days were so miserable and something I will never forget... Such a terrifying thing to feel so out of control of your body, especially when you're making healthy choices! It took my body several months to re-acclimate to eating meat, poultry and eggs and to feel satiated by it. I would highly recommend seeing a nutritionist that specializes in helping people transition away from veganism, as it can be tough on the body to reintroduce foods quickly! I promise it does get easier with time. Proud of you for making a change. Xoxo

I have been mostly vegan these past five years but this past year has been dreadful! I have been starving, craving sweets and nut butters. In an attempt to fill my belly and achieve satisfaction, I would eat copious amounts of my homemade nut butters or troll the supermarket for protein bars and eat maybe five of them. I have gained 10 pounds and feel miserable now because my pants are tight. I recently had my yearly blood work, (I am 55) and so many things were flagged as being too low....protein; hemoglobin; a value which indicates low B-12; Vitamin D and my white blood count. I always ate a nutritious diet consisting of tofu, beans, lots of veggies, whole grains, fruit and nutritional yeast. I started eating organic turkey breast, chicken egg, yogurt and a little organic beef four days ago. I am still starving and only feel satisfied if I have a hardy serving of meat. In your experience, how long will the feeling of hunger go on? I have gained two more pounds and do not want to become even heavier. I am 5' 6" and weigh 135. Thank you for your help!

It's sad to see how your lack of knowledge in nutrition made you believe that you need to eat meat every day in order to be healthy, especially since meat has such a bad influence on your health on the long run and may lead to many fatal diseases. I do understand your feelings though: I also went through the same thing when I tried becoming vegan for the first time and believed that the vegan diet just wasn't for me, while this was actually due my lack of knowledge in nutrition. I still find it strange why you chose to go back at eating the most unhealthy cholesterol-filled products of them all though, instead of trying a different vegan diet with no restrictions. It kind of makes you come off like a smoker, who stopped smoking cigarettes overnight for some time, but then went to smoking crack because not smoking didn't make you feel good due cravings, instead of trying a different method to get rid of the smoking habit.

As for the ethical subject: a choice ceases to be a personal choice when it harms others and sadly, a non-vegan diet does harm billions of innocent sentient lives, people and the environment every year. You can cover your ears and eyes, ignore their screams and cries, but you can't expect people to remain silent about your choice when it harms others. So I find it a bit strange when you say "live and let live" and "let everyone make their own choice" etc. Because aren't you doing exactly the opposite by forcing others (the animals) to DIE for your choice? No one is forcing anything upon you (they couldn't, even if they wanted to): you at the other hand actually ARE forcing your choice on the animals, starving people and the earth. The least you can do is acknowledge that your choice is not a harmless personal choice like choosing a favourite colour, your favourite music or getting a haircut. It's therefore also very respectless to ask people who care about the victims to respect your choice to harm those they love. It's on par with asking a dog lover to respect your choice to breed dogs for dog fights and then add "to each their own" while you watch the dog being mercilessly killed.

I hope you are not taking my comment as an attack, but as food for thought. If you think everyone should make their own choice, then practice what you preach and stop forcing others to DIE for yours. And instead of blaming the vegan diet for your own ignorance, you could also be more honest and blame it on the only thing that caused your health to drop: your orthorexia and lack of nutrition.

Hi,
Found your site thru Dr. McDougall site. Diagnosed with cancer 7 yrs. ago, switched my diet, never looked back. No
progression with my disease, (never an allopathic treatment or drug--just diet) and yep, every once in a while i think of expanding
my horizons, but when i see the "proof" of sticking plant based i slap myself and stay the course. Yea, marketing by others--wheat belly (a joke--imo--) Dr. Jockers--now on the curing cancer kick with a ketogenic diet--how does he really know ?? No "real" proof.
Bulletproof--etc. Read McDougall--Bernard--Novick--Esselstyn--etc. who work with people who many have been cured of many
different diseases. Forget about processed oils, (certainly not in the coconut camp) wouldn't go near em. I'll get my fats from olives--avocados--nuts--nothing
processed. With that being said--am i a saint--nnoooo--i have a martini, a glass of wine, a piece of cheese (rarely) a piece of meat or fish on holidays, and vacations--but rare events. Maybe, if i did not have this disease, i may think
differently, just human nature i'd say--the old what the heck, it can't kill me--lol--
Just my thoughts, glad i found you, some recipes sound delish (i like to cook) though i may tweak em :o)
Sorry to ramble, thanks for listening.
Best to you,
