I've definitely had these problems as well, following for the most part a plant-based diet and exercising daily. I've asked a nutritionist whether mixing too many foods is a problem, and she said there isn't scientific evidence of this, but I disagree. Based on our experiences, I think we can attest that this may indeed be a culprit for feeling bloated, crampy, etc. I can't find evidence for this neither, but I've noticed that when I run longer and harder distances, my stomach becomes more sensitive throughout the day with the foods I eat. My stomach issues were at its worse during my first marathon trainings. I'm sure it's all hormone related. The book Women Code by Alisa Vitti really opened by eyes to this, I definitely recommend!

Oh man Jordan, I can totally relate to this story! I, too, struggled with digestive issues for years and it all of course was exacerbated by hormonal imbalances and HPA axis issues as well. It took me a really long time but I finally found my personal root cause of my IBS, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and the root cause of that was my stress, highly anxious/sensitive/empath person I am where I absorb and hold on to every emotion possible! I do, now after years of battling, feel like a different person digestion-wise and became so passionate about I made it my focus in my practice! I wish you the best of luck in your journey as I know how frustrating it is, XOXO!

I can totally relate! Digestive issues, hormone balancing, restrictive eating, IF and keto. I've been trying to find a balance between it all and it's just so tiring. I just want to eat real food - food that I enjoy and not have to deal with the ups & downs of weight gain and bloating. I love what you said about going back to basics and just eating when your body asks for food. I've been doing IF for a year and have been able to control my weight better. But even that is exhausting at times. I am going to spend more energy listening to my body instead of trying to beat it into submission. I need to work with it and not against it. Thank you so much for sharing your journey! You've totally inspired me today!!

i have been having issues with my stomach for a long time as well. I've recently decided to try cutting out dairy from my diet to see if thats the culprit. It's so much tougher than I thought it would be to cut it all out but I'm hopeful that it'll at least lead me in the right direction of figuring out what's going on on the inside! I hope your method is working well for you girl! tummy issues are seriously the worst <3

I found your podcast through Marissa Lace, I've watched her since she started her YouTube channel. I went back and started with Soul on Fire episode 1 because I was like OH MY GOD...this might be the help and reassurance I've been searching for. Instantly followed on Instagram and started reading your blogposts. Our health journeys are eerily similar.

I was both bulimic and orthorexic for about 7 years. I was young and ignorant on anything other than trying to control my life in every way possible and become as thin as I could. I was an extremist and submerged myself fully in social media and trying every diet along the way - totally old school clean eating, paleo, counting macros, etc. June 2016 I found veganism, and have been vegan for over a year now. After many months of veganism, I was finally able to find peace from bulimia and am so grateful to FINALLY be done with it. I thought it would never end. However, the first week of March 2017 I was hit with the most insane health issues literally all at once - complete gut destruction, Candida, leaky gut, IBS, acne, sinus infections, fatigue, 10 lbs that suddenly appeared...you name it, just like your post said. My doctor couldn't diagnose it (or wouldn't, ugh), so I started all the research on my own to figure out what on earth was going on?! I concluded that after years and years of damage to my gut from bulimia, the occasional binging on alcohol in college, the high impact exercise of all those years, countless antibiotic treatments, 10 years on birth control, and all the other horrible things I had done to my body over that 7 year span, my gut health was just exhausted and done. So I actively started trying to heal myself at the end of May. Your podcasts and blog posts are helping me realize that I'm not alone, even though it feels like it when surrounded by friends, family, and my boyfriend, because they just don't understand how awful it truly is. After listening to your podcast with Kelly on eating for your blood sugar and general nutrition (I totally bought her book as well and am loving it), I am right there with you on going back to the basics meal wise. I'm scheduling to see a naturopath doctor asap and will be so happy to have a guiding hand in dealing with all of this after typical doctors have failed me. My yoga journey started at the same time as my holistic healing and it is saving my soul. I'll always be vegan, it's where my heart and joy are, but I couldn't agree more with everything you wrote above. It has inspired me beyond words. Thank you for sharing your life, because it's changing mine. xoxoxx

One of the biggest fallacies people make is that one can "listen to their bodies." This has been tested time and time again to be false, by testing whether a person can choose foods containing nutrients they claim they need without actually know if the food has them or not or by testing their blood levels before and after going on their "listen to my body" diets.

The human body has cravings only for macronutrients, water, salt calories, glucose, and MSG (aka protein). We've tested the amount needed to satiate these cravings. For protein its about 20g/meal.

Nutrient deficiencies were rampant and a leading cause of death before scientists discovered what they were and their function. People ate more "naturally" then, didn't have processed foods, and still their body never told them to eat citrus fruits when they had scurvy, to eat sesame seeds, mushrooms or peppers when they had pellegra, etc...

When people say they are listening to their bodies, they are really just listening to their minds desires and pretending there's a biological reason behind it.

I honestly think it was meant to be for me to read this today! I recently saw a new doctor to see if he could help with my never ending digestive problems, autoimmune disease etc and he pretty much insisted that I be on the autoimmune paleo diet and that there was no way around it. I've been beating myself up all week trying to get on the diet, eating high protein and high fat foods even though I know they make my acid reflux and other digestive problems worse! After reading this I know I have to find a different approach to healing that works better with my body. Thanks Jordan :)

so instead of skipping breakfast every day for bulletproof coffee and living that intermittent fasting life, i am going to focus on really nourishing my body from the inside out. i am going to make it my mission to LISTEN to my body… eat when I’m hungry, and eat three square meals a day to balance out my hormones and let my body know and trust that nutrients will be coming in at normal times of day.

YUP. I love how much you evolve, babe - it's always just so true and honest and it's so major. I have been trying to do this too, with my hormones being off just trying to be more of what i need to be that day - eating what i need and working out how i need without forcing it.

hope it gets better baby.

I can so relate on stomach issues. I won't go into details - they basically rule my life every day, and it's never fun.

I know you are friends, and work closely with Kelly Leveque. Have you tried anything she has recommended for your stomach issues, and has it helped at all? I love listening to her talk about the science behind how everything works but before I even try her approach, as fat can sometimes seem to upset my stomach, have you tried her approach, had any relief at all in that way? I really don't know where to go or what to do at this point. Traditional doctors have no clue how to help me, and I'm finished with that route, and them telling me to take metamucil.

Praying you find relief! I'll be watching for updates.

Of course your post resonated so much with me, Jordan!!! I feel like diet is such an ever-changing experiment throughout life, and it's REALLY AWESOME that you're at the place where you can do one thing for awhile, and then try something else with no guilt, no coulda-woulda-shoulda. You go girl, keep working on that balance and figuring it all out. I know I'm in the same place with tweaking things, trying new foods, going back to basics, etc. Love ya!!!
