A 95% plant based diet, even a 50% plant based diet means you are NOT recovered from your eating disorder. Anyone whose has an ED should not spend the majority or their work day focusing on food and health and any medical/mental health provider who specializes in testing eating disorder would NEVER EVER suggest a keto type diet or any other kind of diet other than eating a variety of foods from all the food groups including what most people call junk food, but there is really is no “junk” food. There are no bad foods. It’s not normal to make moral judgments about food and to place so much focus and importance on what a person eats...but your focus on those things do show how very active and entrenched your eating disorder really is.

When I first read this blog post two nights ago, I felt connected. I felt that there was finally an excuse to live a leveled, mindful life void of alcohol and toxic foods. I felt it was justified.
I've suffered through anorexia and overexercise to eating fast food everyday and being a "couch potato." I've always been a person of extremes. I've been journaling and practicing mindfulness lately in hopes of figuring out who I truly am and living a happy, balanced life. I've learned that I have a history of putting myself in situations where I feel uneasy and anxious and I want to avoid those feelings as much as possible, but it's challenging.
Yesterday morning, as I prepared for a St Patrick's day full of friends, booze, and food, I felt even more connected. "This isn't me," I told myself. "I should stay at home and find new friends to practice yoga with and share healthy lifestyles with. I'm a new person." But then it dawned on me, I was avoiding the situations for fear of the potential negative outcome: bloating, anxiety, embarrassment. I'm not the binge-drinker I once was. I pulled myself together and went to the festivities as planned. I drank and ate in moderation and had a GREAT time. I feel wonderful. I'm so glad I didn't say no just because I wasn't feeling it or because I was fearful of what could happen.
What I'm trying to say is that I truly believe that following a diet "95%" of the time and labeling it as medicine instead of what it truly is (veganism) just because there aren't as strict of rules doesn't mean that it's not potentially another form of an extreme. I feel wonderful when living a plant-based diet, but there is something to be said about learning to deal with some negative feelings and situations that make you feel a little uncomfortable. It is possible to incorporate SOME meat and refined sugar into your diet and SOME events that make you feel uncomfortable into your schedule. Maybe it should be more of a 80/20 instead of a 95/5. As a nurse, health coach, and ex-eating disorder sufferer, I believe that following a lifestyle and diet 95% of the time (especially when it accompanies weight loss) is a very slippery slope to a full-blown eating disorder even if it's not obvious right now.

Jordan, I love everything about this post. It is so clear that you are living your truth and that is SO inspiring. Especially today, when there seems to be a new diet, health trend, etc. every. single. day. I personally find it overwhelming to keep up with what's good and what's bad, but what you've said is exactly right. Only we hold the answers WITHIN ourselves. I'm going to remember this the next time I feel my body asking for something that may not be in line with the latest health craze. Thank you for reminding us to listen and tune inward, and I'm excited to keep up with your journey! xo

I love this post! I totally, 100% agree that nutrition and health is a personal thing. Only you hold the answers that are appropriate to your life - in every area from work to relationships, too. I love that you are doing so much inner exploration and really taking a holistic approach to health through yoga, meditation, etc., because it's becoming more and more apparent that we must focus on all areas (mind, body & spirit) to attain true balance. Keep putting yourself first so you can shine your light on the world in the brightest way possible. -That Spiritual Chick

I'm so glad you have found a balance and are feeling better! Food issues are truly so frustrating and time and time again it seems that the best thing to do is to experiment and do what feels right for your body. I'm very much a go-with-the-flow kind of person when it comes to health. I'm not a big fan of exercise routines but prefer going to whatever classes and doing whatever workout videos feel right that week. Same with food. And it's been working nicely! I guess it's just important to be grateful for whenever our bodies feel good :)

Love this post! its exactly what ive been searching for. My body is really out of balance, im bloated, tired all the time, my eczema is flaring up, digestion is bleh... Ive been going out so much lately and eating out a lot, so i always had an excuse for eating food my body hates... But i decided today that its over, i need to listen to it even if it means not going to my diner party that night, or out for breakfast on sunday's... beans, vegetables, rice, fruits all make me feel great. I'll go plant-based go a while, i know it helps a lot with my eczema and my mood, i must also break up with coffee for a while (gives me anxiety and my stomach hates it) and my dear chocolate and desserts (adore them, but they make me feel awful)! It seems like we are going through the same thing, its fascinating really! Thanks for your post xxx

I was originally led to you by a judgmental vegan you tuber (who can remain nameless) and wanted to learn your side of the story. It is easy when you label yourself to only surround yourself by others who claim the same label, but I told myself that to be balanced in my own life, I can't only follow raw vegan strict AF people. So, I started to follow you, read your entire blog, started listening to your podcast, etc. Your approach spoke to me, I fell in love with you and lost any judgment I may have felt that first day on Youtube. I am happy to hear that plantbased fools are speaking to you and healing you and can't wait to watch the rest of your journey as you heal through plants. I also strive for a plantbased, not perfect approach. So if I am at a family function, event, baby shower and my only options are fish, or there is milk in my tomato soup I don't freak out about it. I think by not labeling ourselves it helps take off the pressure from others and ourselves. Medical Medium is amazing, so glad you have been helped by him! xx Elizabeth
