Kim, I can't even convey to you in words how much this comment resonated with me. I read it yesterday afternoon when I was running around, and it has been in my mind ever since. It is SO true that focusing on small victories is so essential to our healing process... huge changes do not happen overnight (as much as we want them to), and if we disregard the smaller victories then we aren't giving ourselves nearly enough credit. And having the strength to stay in place rather than go backwards is a definite victory. I am so happy you said that... the voice in my head is always telling me if I don't move ten paces forward in one day then there has been no victory at all. Learning to focus on staying in place will be very good for me. Thank you <3

Emily, thank you so much for this lovely comment. I seriously appreciate it. It's VERY hard to get over a less-than-healthy relationship with food, but the healing process is so therapeutic and beautiful once you actually allow yourself to get there. And YES, Candle 79 & Candle Cafe are both incredible. Same with Blossom!! Sounds like you need to get your butt back to NYC soon for some delicious eats :) xoxox

Babe, OF COURSE I bee-lined for the Juice Press, boyfriend-in-tow, the second I got into the city. I wish I was kidding! Ok, I got the same thing every. single. time. I started with the Volcano (every time I took I sip I was like WHOA - I'm AWAKE!,) bought a Mother Earth (my fave green juice,) and ended my excurison with a customized smoothie.

I can't stay away from it: the Peaching to the Choir! But I make it so weird. I nix the agave, (it's sweet enough!) add maca, spirulina, ginger, cayenne, & e3 live, and ask them to make it extra thick. I always give a big tip too because that is one ridiiiiiiculous order!

And girrrrl, have you been to Babycakes? It's on Broome in LES. It's this adorable vegan, gluten-free, and partly refined-sugar-free bakery. It's just divine, one of my favorite places to get a kombucha and a vegan cupcake top and just sit and people watch. As for those kombucha-vodka cocktails, we made them ourselves before going out. A little pregaming never hurt anyone, yeahh??

Kisses!

Thank you so, so much for opening up about this. I've dealt with a less-than-healthy relationship with food most of my life and have only recently begun to overcome it. It's a process...a lengthy one...but it's so worth it.
Nourishing our bodies with healthy foods and exercise is crucial but so is balance. It's okay to indulge sometimes-- in fact, it's healthy. Allowing ourselves to enjoy the foods that we're craving is nourishing to our minds and spirits which is just as important.

PS: I LOVE Candle 79. I look forward to eating there every time I'm in NYC. Their sister restaurant, Candle Cafe, is also delicious and has a more laid-back vibe. Oooh, and Blossom. Blossom is heaven. Gah. I think it's time for another trip to New York!

Awww, thank you SO MUCH for this beautiful comment, Jenni!! I can't even tell you how happy reading it just made me. It's so nice to connect with others who totally understand, and you're right! Most people wouldn't even find that meal indulgent, but to me it was the hugest deal on earth. And SO TRUE that dessert exists solely for our dining pleasure and people are rarely hungry for it... that is a great way to look at it. You rock!! So lucky to have you reading :) xoxox

I just recently wrote a blog post about my eating disorder struggles, and how I finally got rid of my scale! Actually threw it away. I think one of the things that has always scared me the most about really indulgent days is that I'll physically see the number go up on the scale the next morning--proof that I ate too much. Not owning a scale anymore is very freeing, and allowing ourselves to indulge is an important part of life. Most people wouldn't even consider your meal at Candle to be "indulgent", but as someone with a history of disordered eating, I can relate to everything you've talked about in this post, and I'm super proud of you for allowing yourself such a fantastic meal with the people you love. What's the point of meals like that if you're not going to fully enjoy yourself? Considering it comes AFTER dinner, people are rarely, if ever, actually HUNGRY for dessert. It exists for our dining pleasure, and I'm glad to see you allowed yourself that gift. :)

So proud of you for taking control of letting go (if that makes sense). Because of my history of disordered eating, I can definitely relate to how BIG such seemingly small decisions can be. I was struggling recently and a fellow blogger reminded me to focus on small victories. She also pointed out that sometimes just having the strength to stay in place (rather than go backwards) is a victory. So that's what I try to do, ever day, every meal, every snack, silence the little voice (whether it's shouting or whispering) that is telling me to restrict or to feel guilty and keep making baby steps toward a truly unrestricted relationship with food.

I just adore your shirts & um I want one!!! Will have to check out your site soon. Proud of you girl for indulging and enjoying your meal. I've learned that balance is key, and if you want another slice of pie one day - friggen eat it. I guarantee you won't suffer in weight, or ruin all the hard work you've put in... as long as it's not on an every day all day basis. If we restrict ourselves with food, theres no doubt we'll all be having some type of eating disorder - big or large <3

Amazing, congrats on the clothing line. That's spectacular, best of wished to you. All the food you had looks amazing. One thing I learned is not to beat myself for not sticking to being healthy 100%. The beauty is that you're able to get back of track and talk about it. Good for you!
